May 9 Friday 9 Calzada de Béjar Another Darn Rest Day

May 9 Friday 9 Calzada de Béjar
Another Darn Rest Day

There are people in this town who walk around talking to themselves out loud and walk through their dog through the plaza in their pajamas and bath robe. I feel right at home. :) I have no phone service here for some reason and the albergue has no wifi. But there is wifi in the plaza. So this morning I went an sat in the plaza in the rising sun and sent my posts. This is a good place to take a rest day because there is absolutely nothing to do, buy or see. So, unlike Cáceres, I will be forced to rest.

If my knee is not better by tomorrow, I will take a bus to Salamanca and spend a few days there resting and visiting a few familiar places and friends. I would prefer to walk. But the following day after tomorrow is the longest stage of this Camino with nothing in between, not even good or water. It is 27.8km (17miles) with 429meters (1400ft) elevation gain and 410meters (1345ft) loss. It's the elevation loss that concerns me. It is the downhill that kills my knee. So maybe if I can walk to the beginning of that stage, I can bus or taxi that tough stage. Only time will tell. If I was even a little bit wise, I would do what I did in Logoño on my first Camino and rest for five days.

Dinner here at Hostal Alba Soraya was wonderful. Home made vegetable soup, pork filets, salad and slices of ice cream roll for dessert. Yummy! The people here, husband and wife are very nice. The pueblo is very small and looks like it is dying. It's too bad, it's a lovely spot. Well time for a shower.

I know you are all busy, but if you could find a moment to ale even a small comment about my posts or about your own life, it would be greatly appreciated. Ok I humbled myself next I might resort to begging and then groveling. That's not a pretty picture. You don't want to see that. ;)

I was a good girl today, I rested. I took a shower, did my laundry, read a book, and took a nap. I also wrapped my knee, in the best imitation I could manage, the way my Guardian Angel Josef wrapped it two years ago. I'm going to try a short walk tomorrow. The owner of the albergue here called the albergue there to make sure they are open. So I'm hoping it is a good walk. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

  1. This way certainly sounds quieter and less populated - more time for reflection, I suppose. My first rest day was not fun, but after that I started to like the time I had for exploring and relaxing - it should be partially that, anyway! I appreciate your honest appraisal of the situations that you find yourself in - continued Buen Camino!
